Real Estate Investment Trusts in Panama

As the saying goes, “the proof is in the pudding,” and Panama has done just that…proved itself.  Proved that not only is it a fabulous place to retire with your toes in the sand and a cocktail in your hand, it is an excellent opportunity for real estate investments. Recent reports state that 2015 will bring an offering of Real Estate Investment Trusts in Panama (REITS).  For the past couple years the Panamanian government has been putting all necessary legislation and regulations in place to make it happen. With the growing real estate market and the fact that current investments only lie in the hands of a few, there is a need for liquidity and foreign investors. According to a recent article published in the Wall Street Journal: Panama has set Real Estate Investment Trusts in Panama guidelines that don’t place many restrictions on what its REITs can do. For example, Panama doesn’t limit how much debt its REITs can take on or require them to choose between being internally managed by their own executives or externally managed by outside advisers. Neither does the country limit the fees its Real Estate Investment Trusts in Panama charge their investors. Rather, Panama has opted to require its REITs to regularly disclose nearly everything about their operations and strategy so that investors can decide for themselves whether the risk is acceptable to them.” Lawmakers and officials are estimating a large amount of both domestic and foreign investors will take advantage of the REIT systems soon to be offered. Just a little more evidence this already dynamic and emerging market will continue to flourish and grow… and I am excited to be a part of it!
